PS5 and Xbox Series X performance may come with a major catch

The PS5 and Xbox Series X will not extinguish games at 30 fps, despite their stated goal of delivering 4K games at 60 fps.

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry took a deep dive into the performance of the two upcoming next-generation consoles, explaining that games will still be played at 30fps when the consoles launch at the end of the year. Richard Leadbetter, a gaming performance guru, noted that developers will have to choose between delivering next-generation graphics or doubling the frame rate, or rather both.

Leadbetter said that Horizon: Leadbetter suggested that games coming out on PS5, such as Horizon: Forbidden West and Ratchet and Clank, will have next-generation graphics and fidelity made possible by the next-generation GPU in the PS5. He suggested that they will be equipped with However, when delivering such gorgeous visuals, especially with ray tracing enabled, the PS5 hardware may leave little headroom to push frame rates up to 60 fps.

Analyzing footage from the PS5 game showcase in June, Leadbetter concluded: "Sony's PS5 showcase strongly suggests that 30fps will remain an enabler for some phenomenal visual experiences.

While this may disappoint some console game fans who had hoped that 60fps would be the standard for all games in the next generation, Leadbetter said that forcing developers to go this route is a "fundamentally bad idea." He said that such a move could force developers to compromise on the visual quality of their games.

Leadbetter and we predict that older games ported to the PS5 and Xbox Series X will benefit from the power of the new consoles and run at 60 fps or better. On the other hand, new titles that offer a new step up in graphics will probably run at 30 fps, at least until developers become familiar with the console's architecture.

Not surprisingly, Leadbetter points out that the best way to achieve full-blown high-fidelity, high-frame-rate games is to get a powerful PC. But that does not diminish the potential of the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Both models will offer impressive gaming experiences, especially as they mature. One look at the graphics Naughty Dog pulled out of the PS4 with The Last Of Us 2 will give us an idea of what the PS5 is ultimately capable of."
