OnePlus buds revealed - and they destroy AirPods on battery life

The OnePlus Buds launched at the same time as the OnePlus Nord, and the company appears to have a rival to rival the AirPods. The new OnePlus Buds seem to stand out especially in battery life, with rated listening time beating Apple's wireless earbuds.

In a new OnePlus blog post, the company claims that the OnePlus Buds can be used for up to 30 hours before being plugged in. This is with the included charging case, which can charge the earbuds "more than three times" on a single charge.

In contrast, the AirPods have 24 hours of battery life when using the charging case. Without the use of a charger, the OnePlus Buds also have the advantage, promising up to 7 hours of battery life, compared to 5 hours for the AirPods.

The OnePlus Buds outperform the AirPods when it comes to charging speed, offering 10 hours of runtime with only 10 minutes of charging time. In comparison, AirPods can only charge for 3 hours on a 15-minute charge.

In an interview with TechRadar, Jay Liu, project manager for the OnePlus Buds, explained that this advantage is due to OnePlus' use of Warp Charge technology.

While the photos provided by OnePlus for the OnePlus Buds do not reveal much, the company has stated that it focused on comfort and long wear time. To that end, the Buds feature a half-in-ear design.

OnePlus also claims to have improved the shape of the OnePlus Buds so that they "sit securely in most people's ears." In other words, they should not come loose, but OnePlus does not say whether it will offer tips or if the standard design will be offered as is.

OnePlus says the OnePlus Buds themselves are very light at 4.6 grams (0.16 oz.) and the charging case is 36 grams (1.26 oz.) The AirPods are light at 4 grams (0.14 oz.), but Apple's case is 40 grams (1.41 oz.) and a bit heavier.

One of the main selling points of the AirPods is that they pair seamlessly with the iPhone, and it appears that OnePlus is trying to offer "deeper optimization" for OnePlus phones while offering the same for other smartphones.

For example, when gaming mode is enabled on a OnePlus device, the OnePlus Buds will be in ultra-low latency mode. Its purpose is to reflect the speed of the wired headphones during a gaming session.

There are still a few things we don't know about the OnePlus Buds, including price, availability of equalizer and audio controls, and release date. However, we will have more information when the OnePlus Nord goes on sale on July 21. For now, the OnePlus Buds looks like a worthy competitor to the AirPods, especially when it comes to durability.
