"Avatar 2" was scheduled to be released on December 17, 2021 This is the date previously announced on 20th Century Pictures' website Avatarcom It seemed as if Cameron was trying to plant a flag on the ground, perhaps hoping to wrest the ground ceded by the Star Wars films by the Avatar franchise [However, as of July 23, it is not known when "Avatar 2" will be released The Avatar official tweeted a letter from Cameron explaining that the film's holiday release has been canceled "due to the impact the pandemic has had on our schedule"
According to a Facebook post made on the film franchise's official page, "Avatar 2" began production on April 22, 2017 The page showed four release dates for the discontinued or changed Avatar films, claiming that "Avatar 2" would be released in December 2020

While set photos for Avatar 2 are not yet available, Variety obtained concept art images from Disney, which owns 20th Century Studios The images, shown below, support producer Jon Landau's comment that the Sully family's underwater adventures are definitely a major focus of the film
