Gabe Newell says Xbox Series X is better than PS5 — "Because it is"

The console wars may not matter much to major PC players, but that didn't stop Valve co-founder Gabe Newell from stating that he believes the Xbox Series X is better than the PS5.

In an interview with the New Zealand TV show "The Project," Newell was asked which of the two next-generation consoles he thought was better. He sharply replied: "It's the Xbox."

As one of the developers of Half-Life games and the Steam PC gaming platform, you would expect a fairly insightful answer as to why Newell would color himself in the Xbox series X-mast. His answer was simply, "Because it is."

Of course, while many of Valve's games have been ported to various consoles over the years, Newell is best known for his PC games. And Newell still seems to be firmly in the PC camp.

"I'm not involved in that competition," Newell explained his answer. Of course, we do most of our development on PCs, but between the two, I would definitely choose the Xbox."

The topic then moved on, with The Project moderator firing a barrage of questions at the gaming magnate. Newell is in New Zealand on vacation, not because of Valve's new project, but because of a coronavirus spike in the United States, Valve's home base.

Newell seems to prefer the Xbox Series X over the PS5 because Microsoft's machine offers 12 teraflops of power, compared to the PS5's 10.28 teraflops. However, Sony's console has a faster SSD, an intriguing DualSense controller, and 3D audio capabilities.

Newell also briefly discussed virtual reality, which Valve seems to be quite interested in since they released their VR game Half-Life: Alyx earlier this year. We would like to think that Valve could find new and interesting ways to leverage the power of the Xbox Series X, but that is pure speculation.

Nevertheless, the fact that such a heavyweight in the gaming world has chosen the Xbox Series X over the PS5 is a new attraction for the Xbox Series X.
