PS5 8 May event may reveal price and release date

A group of leakers claims that a PS5 event in late August will announce the price and release date and reveal a complete hardware breakdown and full backward compatibility. If this is true, it is too good to be true. The "leakers" who shared this information have a long history of being inaccurate about these things.

The discussion of the August PS5 event comes from Tidux and Roberto Serrano, two prominent PS5 critics on Twitter; Tidux became famous for pointing out all the features of DualSense, and Serrano was the first to point out Sony's June PS5 He guessed the date of the event correctly.

To summarize their claims, Tidux claims that Sony wants to have a big event in late August or early September, but the company initially wanted to share information in early August. The event is said to include a hardware teardown, backward compatibility information, more exclusive game reveals, and finally a PS5 release date and price.

(The promise of a hardware teardown is an odd one, especially since Sony already did that in March. If there was any part of Mark Cerny's extensive talk that did not mention the PS5, I can't think of it.)

Serrano's claim is more modest, but more accurate: using a photoshopped image from the "Future of Gaming" event in June, Serrano claims that "what PlayStation fans have been waiting for" will take place on August 20 at 1:00 PM PT He claims that the event will be held on August 20 at 1:00 p.m. PT. No further information is available at this time, but he promises more to come.

While it is not out of the realm of possibility that Sony will share further information about the PS5 this month, there is absolutely no reason to believe that either "leaker" is entitled to it; Tidux's big DualSense "reveal" is based on patent information that has been publicly available for months, and the PS5's "leaker" has been a major source of confusion for many years, Serrano made up pricing and pre-order information, specifically promising that Sony would be ready to start PS5 pre-orders on July 13. (Nothing significant has happened on July 13.)

Granted, Sony has adopted its own schedule for the PS5 reveal, and there may be a surprise announcement tomorrow regarding the PS5 price and release date. There could be a surprise event at the end of the month. Or the price and release date may remain a complete mystery until the console starts hitting store shelves a month before Christmas.

Importantly, Sony has not shared any of this information, and there is no reason to think that the two Twitter personalities who have made up information for attention before have any special insight this time around.

As always, the best way to get reliable information about Sony events is to follow the official PlayStation account on Twitter, and Tom'sGuide will keep you informed of every major PS5 announcement as it happens! We plan to.
