Xiaomi has revealed a透明7,000 transparent OLED TV - and it's completely ridiculous

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is celebrating its 10th anniversary by giving everyone the TV no one wanted. Xiaomi is launching its first mass-produced transparent OLED TV, the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition.

According to Xiaomi, this transparent TV offers a "super-penetrating viewing experience" like a "picture floating in the air." And it doesn't come cheap: the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition will go on sale in China on August 16 for 50,000 yuan (or $7,200).

The 55-inch set features a 120Hz refresh rate, 150,000:1 contrast ratio, DCI-P3 93% color spectrum support, extra-wide color spectrum, Dolby Atmos support, and 1ms pixel response time.

During the presentation, CEO Ray Jun demonstrated how this new transparent TV works by putting his arm behind the screen and making it look like a butterfly had landed on his hand. When the TV is turned off, it appears to be a transparent glass display.

Xiaomi's model is not the first transparent OLED on the market; LG has the 55EW5F-A, which is used primarily as signage. You have probably seen transparent screens used as futuristic signage in shopping malls. Indeed, Xiaomi's press release touts the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition for use in galleries, museums, shopping malls, theaters, and homes.

The use of transparent TVs in the home is more for novelty. Even Xiaomi says their new set is "an art piece, not a TV."

Xiaomi has not revealed if or when the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition will be available outside the US and China. However, we are eager to try it out.
