The PS5 leak claims it could have a hard time running the game in 4K

Despite its 10.28 teraflops of power, the PS5 may struggle to run games at true 4K.

This is according to a Twitter leaker named AestheticGamer, who has a reasonably solid track record with PS5 leaks, who said they have heard from developers that the PS5 tends to struggle to run games at 4K.

"I've heard from other developers that the PS5 struggles with 4K games in particular, so we'll be seeing a lot of fake 4K," AestheticGamer said in response to a question about the PS5's performance when running the Capcom graphics engine that powers Resident Evil 8. AestheticGamer asked about the PS5's performance when running Capcom's graphics engine that powers Resident Evil 8. In response to a question asking about the performance of Capcom's graphics engine running Resident Evil 8 on the PS5, AestheticGamer said, "The Xbox [series] X does not have the same problem."

What AestheticGamer calls "faux 4K" is likely a reference to checkerboard rendering, where the PS5 renders images at the less demanding 1440p or so resolution and then blowups the scene to 4K with an unrendered The PS4 Pro has been using this technique for a while and the results are pretty solid overall.

However, many PlayStation fans are hoping that the PS5 will be a native 4K console, delivering games at 60 frames per second at that resolution. However, for a graphically demanding game like the upcoming "Assassin's Creed Valhalla," achieving the goal of 60 frames per second at 4K may be a bit ambitious.

The 12 teraflops GPU in the Xbox Series X will likely give it enough power to run games at 4K, but it remains to be seen whether the goal is 30 fps or 60 fps for demanding titles.

Note that AestheticGamer did not explain which developers they spoke to, so these claims should be taken with a grain of salt. Also, the PS5 is still early days, and some developers are still getting used to the console's architecture.

With time, we can expect more optimization of games and ways to get more performance out of the PS5. As we can see from The Last of Us 2, we can see how impressive the graphics of that game are on the PS4, which is in the twilight of its console generation.

It won't be long before we see what exactly the PS5 can do in the real world, as it will be announced along with the Xbox Series X at the end of the year, probably in November.
