Samsung Galaxy Note 20 gets three years of Android update — but there is a catch

One of the tricky things about buying a Samsung phone is that you never quite know when you will get the latest version of Android, although phones like OnePlus and Nokia get Android updates rather quickly after launch, Samsung often takes longer to provide users with new versions of Android.

To address this confusion, Samsung has created a list of all phones that will receive three generations of Android upgrades, including the new Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20. This list also includes the Galaxy S series, Galaxy A series, Galaxy foldable phones, and the recent Galaxy Tab tablet.

This should be a bit of a relief for people thinking about getting a Samsung phone, knowing that they have three years of support for the latest version of Android.

A full list of supported devices can be found at.

Samsung, however, did not elaborate on whether Google would commit to speeding up its rollout when it releases the latest version of Android.

The "small print" in Samsung's announcement added the caveat that the update schedule "will depend on factors including, but not limited to, update complexity, model, and market penetration." This effectively incorporates a clause acknowledging that some devices may not get the latest version of Android as quickly as other Android devices.

However, Samsung's commitment to provide three generations of Android support would suggest that the company is working to improve Android device updates across the board.

"Samsung is committed to helping users fully enjoy the latest mobile experience while using Galaxy devices," Janghyun Yoon, senior vice president and head of the mobile communications business software platform team at Samsung Electronics Co. said. We are working to bring secure protection and exciting new features to the devices people already have in their hands so they can keep their devices longer.

"By supporting up to three generations of Android OS upgrades, we are committed to extending the life cycle of Galaxy products and providing a simple, secure mobile experience that takes advantage of the latest innovations as they become available."

If nothing else, Samsung's commitment to Android updates means you'll be able to use your Galaxy phone or tablet longer. That's good news for people who want to get as much as they can out of their technology.
