This Android phone just stole the killer feature of Galaxy S21

A few days after Chinese phone maker ZTE announced that the ZTE Axon 20 5G would feature the first under-display camera, we got our first official look at the phone ahead of its September 1 announcement. Quite impressive hardware.

Thanks to a series of images released by the company itself via Dutch publication Tweakers, we can wrap our heads around what this phone looks like and how it could steal the thunder from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21.

Shared by Ni Fei, ZTE's president of mobile devices, on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the images are unassuming until you look a little closer. At first glance, the ZTE Axon 20 5G looks a lot like other smartphones we've seen, with one notable difference.

Samsung's Galaxy S21 is rumored to feature its own under-display camera, but that won't be announced until February.

Rendered images of the Axon 20 offer both front and rear views of the device. The front has a seemingly nondescript panel with nothing on display. It is difficult to make out the bezel or the actual location of the front camera; according to the TENAA listing (China's equivalent of the FCC), the panel is a 6.92-inch Full HD+ OLED screen with a Snapdragon 765G chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

A 4,300-4,400 mAh battery will power the Z20 5G--at least that's what the rumored specs so far claim.

Additional images released by Fei on Weibo show the ZTE Axon 20 5G's screen lit up in an image rendered horizontally rather than vertically. A minimal bottom bezel is visible on the right side of the phone (actually at the bottom of the device), but the camera is not visible when the screen is powered up. It is hard to pinpoint where it actually is, but it is certainly a smart look for this phone as it is.

Then there's the back of the ZTE Axon 20 5G, with a dark, glossy wave pattern and a row of four vertical cameras with 64MP main lenses. There is also a row of buttons on the right side of the phone. And the fact that the Axon 20 will feature a front camera hidden under the display only serves to make the Axon 20 stand out even more.

Of course, ZTE is not the only manufacturer moving to under-display camera technology. Xiaomi and Oppo have previously expressed interest in adding these features to their smartphones, but this is the first time we've seen a clear rendering of what ZTE has up its sleeve.

Unfortunately, there are still many things we don't know about the Axon 20 5G, including whether it will actually ship outside of China and when it will debut; hopefully, come September 1, everything will be clear, including what the camera looks and works like.
