An overnight viral sensation, this small Chinese team just released the breathtaking action-adventure game "Black Myth: Wukong," which may be one of the best showcases for the new consoles and high-end gaming desktops.

Why do you care?

Why do we care? Fans of so-called "Souls" games will find "Black Myth: Wukong" a challenging third-person combat game that explores a deeply and intricately constructed world.

The game is based on the myth of Journey to the West and tells the story of a Buddhist monk who travels from his homeland in southern China to India to bring the scriptures back to his country, protected by Sun Wukong, a mix of human, monkey, and trickster god. Player characters transform into insects, use magical abilities, fight werewolf-like enemies, and battle giant wolf-like creatures like those in From Software's "Bloodborne."

The 13-minute trailer is in Chinese, a language with which we are not very familiar, making it difficult to glean narrative details from the video. What we could see, however, is that it looks seriously pretty.

The forested area where the trailer takes place has gorgeous detail, with leaves, bunches of grass, and moss-covered rocks that make you want to reach out and touch them, and the combat in Black Myth: Wu Kong also has smooth movement and animation, with each hit bursting onto the screen The variety of graphic effects that burst onto the screen with each hit make it look quite clever.

The lighting also looks quite phenomenal, although no ray tracing was detected. This is a bit surprising given that this rendering technique will be supported by the PS5 and Xbox Series X and enhanced by the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. Nevertheless, all of the "Black Myth: Goku" look gorgeous. [Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us 2 are notable examples. However, with both next-gen consoles and powerful PCs like "Black Myth: Wu Kong," we can expect an increased level of detail, more effects, and a fluidity of movement and animation.

Interestingly, "Black Myth: Wukong" uses Unreal Engine 4 rather than the new 5th generation engine. So if you can achieve such excellent graphics with an engine that has been around for a while, it means that we can expect great things from Unreal Engine 5 graphics outside of the tech demo.

However, it will be at least a year or so before Chinese indie studio Game Science releases Black Myth: Wukong. No matter how polished it looks in the trailer, the game is "far from finished."

In short, next-gen consoles mean a new generation of gorgeous visual titles.
