The Google Pixel5 leak revealed all the important specs — here's what you get

As renderings of the Pixel 5 hit the web, a new report has revealed many of the specs Google is planning for its next flagship. And it almost confirms that Google is scaling back some features in the name of creating a cheaper Pixel.

The report comes from Android Central, which claims to have confirmed several details about the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. The report confirms much of what we've been hearing about Google's Pixel 5 plans, starting with the phone's processor. [According to Android Central, both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a will feature the Snapdragon 765G system-on-chip, as has been rumored. This is a step backward for Pixel, as Google's flagship devices to date have used Qualcomm's top-of-the-line 8 series chipset. (This year it is the Snapdragon 865, which powers many of the best Android phones coming out in 2020.)

However, by using the Snapdragon 765G, Google can offer 5G connectivity in the Pixel 5 while providing performance there, if not a pace-setter. The 5G modem included in this chipset also explains what it does inside the Pixel 4a 5G. According to reports, both models will have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

As for screen size, the Pixel 5 will have a 6-inch OLED panel, while the Pixel 4a 5G's display will be larger at 6.2 inches. The Pixel 5 is expected to maintain the 90Hz refresh rate that Google introduced with the Pixel 4 lineup but it is unclear if that will be on the Pixel 4a 5G. Given that the standard Pixel 4a, which debuts this month, uses a 60Hz refresh rate, we assume not.

You may have noticed no mention of the Pixel 5 XL in this specs table. That's because Google seems to be removing the XL model from its lineup, as has been previously suggested. Allegedly, the XL model is not that popular with Pixel buyers, which helps explain Google's decision.

It is worth noting that even though the Pixel 5 has a larger screen than the 5.81-inch Pixel 4a, Android Central claims that the Pixel 5 will have "roughly the same footprint as the 4a" thanks to smaller bezels. That would seem to confirm that the Soli chip added to the Pixel 4 to support gesture-based controls will be useless in just one year.

The report makes some puzzling claims about the Pixel 5's camera. Google's flagship smartphone gets an ultra-wide lens, which the Pixel 4 lacked. However, the Pixel 5 will reportedly only have two rear cameras, which means the Pixel 4's 16-megapixel telephoto lens will be discontinued. It seems like an odd choice, but perhaps Google is betting that the company's Super Resozoom technology is advanced enough to make up for the lack of optical zoom in the phone. By eliminating the telephoto lens, the company will probably also be able to keep costs down.

Google has already confirmed that the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 will be available, with the former costing $499. no word on the Pixel 5's price, but the specs in this report suggest it will be cheaper than the $799 debut price of the Pixel 4 Expected.

Google typically releases new flagship phones in October, but a recent report claims that the Pixel 5 could debut by September 30. How accurate these specs are seems to be soon to be known.
