Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has Bad news for PS5 and Xbox Series X players

Good news for upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X buyers: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is not a free upgrade from current to next-gen consoles.

However, for an additional $10, you can purchase the CrossGen Bundle, which will allow you to play the game on the new consoles coming in November. The CrossGen Bundle costs $69.99 on both the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store, while the regular console version is $59.99.

If you opt for the CrossGen bundle, you can upgrade the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game without having to purchase the game again; in a FAQ, Activision said that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game will run on the next-gen consoles, but that new next-gen features like ray tracing and graphics upgrades and other new features of next-gen consoles will not be included.

To upgrade the PS4 version of Cold War to the PS5 version, use the PlayStation Store. Note that if you are upgrading a physical copy of the game, you will need to use the PS4 disc in order to play it on PS5 (be careful if you were considering purchasing the PS5 Digital Edition).

On the other hand, Activision notes that the physical Xbox Series X version of Cold War can be played on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X, which seems to be the best bet for Xbox players. The physical next-gen version of Cold War is priced at $70, which is the same price as the digital cross-gen bundle for both PlayStation and Xbox.

It is nothing new in the console world for publishers to try to sell gamers upgraded versions of games they already own when next-generation consoles arrive. However, the PS5 and Xbox Series X aim to shake up that status quo a bit with comprehensive backward compatibility that offers visual upgrades.

However, Activision's move with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, a free upgrade for all games purchased on Xbox One for those who jump to Xbox Series X This is largely contrary to Microsoft's "Smart Delivery" initiative, in which upgrades are automatically included.

For "Cyberpunk 2077" on PS5 and Xbox Series X, CD Projekt Red will offer a free upgrade to those who purchase the game on their respective current generation consoles. The same also applies to new content for Destiny 2.

Pre-ordering "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" now gives you early access to the open beta, access to the "Showdown" weapon pack, and immediate use in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and "Call of Duty: Warzone Operator Frank Woods" and an Assault Rifle Weapon Blueprint. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is scheduled for release on November 13.
