Release Date, Price, Specifications, and Leaks of OnePlus Clover

The OnePlus Clover appears to be another big move for OnePlus. The company has been increasing its interest in more affordable phones, such as the recently launched OnePlus Nord. Currently, most of the information on the OnePlus Clover comes from a single source. However, based on what has been leaked so far, the Clover sounds impressive, especially since it is rumored to be priced around $200. This includes a huge battery and a triple-camera setup on the back.

The Clover may be one of the best inexpensive phones yet. Here's what we're hearing so far about the OnePlus Clover.

According to Android Central, the source for much of this information, the Clover will be available by the end of this year. More importantly, this time it will launch in the U.S. OnePlus sells the flagship OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro to U.S. customers, while the mid-range OnePlus Nord is limited to Europe and India.

The Clover is apparently shockingly cheap at $200, which is half the price of the Nord, the cheapest OnePlus phone today. This is half the price of the Nord, which is currently the cheapest OnePlus phone. We do not know if this is just the basic version of several configurations or a single version.

So far, we only have details on one model with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage; OnePlus often sells phones with two different memory specifications, with the Nord and OnePlus 8 series offering 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, or 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

There is no comment on what the Clover will look like, but we can speculate based on OnePlus' current lineup.

The front will likely be a punch hole like the current phones OnePlus sells, or a water-drop notch like last year's OnePlus 7T, or a notched display if OnePlus doesn't mind the Clover looking a bit old-fashioned.

The backs of OnePlus phones have cameras stacked vertically; the 8 series has them in the center of the back, while the Nord has them closer to the left. since the Nord is expected to be more of a Clover template than the 8 series, a camera positioned more to the left is Nord is expected to be more like the Clover template than the 8 series, so the camera is expected to be placed more to the left.

We also hear that the Clover will feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, a move that makes sense since many sub-$200 shoppers may not have upgraded to the best wireless earbuds yet.

The back of the Clover is rumored to feature a fingerprint sensor for security purposes; it doesn't look as neat as the under-display sensor that OnePlus uses on the Nord and 8 series. However, it would be cheaper to mount it on the back, which is clearly a major priority for this device.

OnePlus typically offers a sleek but limited range of metallic color options, but Nord bucked the trend with glossy Blue Marble and Gray Onyx options. Again, we expect Clover to follow Nord's example and offer more glossy and vibrant colors.

According to a leak from Android Central, the Clover features a 6.52-inch HD+ LCD display. This is larger than the OnePlus Nord's 6.4" OLED screen, but the Nord has a higher FHD+ resolution. In addition, OLED panels generally have better viewing angles than LCDs, offering more vibrant colors and better black levels.

There is no mention of high refresh rates in the leaked information; both the OnePlus Nord and 8 models have 90Hz panels, and the top-of-the-line 8 Pro has a 120Hz display. At this price point, we would be shocked if the Clover did not have a 60Hz display.

The Clover has three rear cameras. The cameras have resolutions of 13 MP, 2 MP, and 2 MP, but the function of these sensors is not yet known. Speculation is that there will be a main sensor, a macro sensor for super close-up shots, and a depth sensor to help with portrait mode effects like bokeh.

We are basing this on the fact that the two smallest sensors on the Nord have these features, but instead the depth sensor is 5MP. Do not expect super wide angle or telephoto sensors at these resolutions or at the low price of this phone.

As for the selfie camera, there is nothing to base this on; OnePlus uses a 16MP front camera on the 8 and 8 Pro flagships, and the Nord combines a 32MP main with an 8MP ultrawide. Based on these existing sensors, we would guess that OnePlus will put a smaller 16MP sensor on the Clover, but they may be planning something else that we haven't seen before.

At the heart of the Clover will be a Snapdragon 460 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. This will undoubtedly put the Clover at the bottom of the performance showdown, but should help keep the price in the low $200s. 4GB of RAM seems about right for the chipset on board, but 64GB of storage is a bit too small for the average cell phone user these days It might be. Happily, there seems to be room for a microSD card if expansion is needed.

Previously, there was a leaked Geekbench listing for a phone called the OnePlus Clover with a Snapdragon 660 (or 665) chipset and 4GB RAM. That would make the Clover less powerful than Nord's Snapdragon 765 chipset. However, it does mean that it is much more powerful than the Android Central leak claims.

The Clover's most notable spec is its rumored 6,000 mAh battery. This is nearly 1,500 mAh more than OnePlus' current largest battery, the 4,510 mAh of the OnePlus 8 Pro, given that OnePlus phones usually have fairly decent battery life, if this is indeed the size of the power pack, Clover has great promise.

Less impressive is the 18W charging brick that fills the battery; OnePlus currently includes a 30W charger with the 8 Series and Nord, but it is probably too expensive to include with the Clover.

To no one's surprise, the Clover's OS is said to be OxygenOS 10, which is the OS OnePlus uses on the Nord and 8 Series and is based on Android 10. OnePlus usually releases a new version of Android after, upgrade fairly quickly, so the Clover is expected to use Android 11 for most of its lifespan.

The OnePlus Clover has the potential to be one of the best phones for those on a budget, especially with its huge 6,000 mAh battery. It could give phones like the Moto G Power a run for their money in our best phone battery life list. The display size also appears to be generous, albeit LCD.

If the leaked specs are accurate, we'll have to make some trade-offs for this sub-$200 price, including processor and RAM. However, we look forward to seeing how much OnePlus can offer for the phone.

Whether the rumored OnePlus Nord Lite is another device is unknown at the time of this writing. In any case, OnePlus customers on a tight budget, especially those in the U.S. who missed out on the Nord, should keep their ears open for further Clover news in the near future.
