OnePlus may be entering the smartwatch game to compete with the Apple Watch 6. And according to a listing on the Infocomm Media Development Authority website (found by 91Mobiles), the wearable will be called the OnePlus Watch.

When I spoke to OnePlus about the OnePlus Nord phone and product line, I got the impression that OnePlus has more than just phones, earphones, and TVs for Asia. So it is not a big surprise that the OnePlus Watch could be the next non-phone device.

Rumors of a OnePlus Watch have been floating around for several years, but nothing substantial has come of it. In the meantime, Apple has further improved the Apple Watch, now in its fifth generation.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3 impressed us, but there is certainly room for a new smartwatch to enter the fray and challenge the Apple Watch.

A former OnePlus employee told sibling site TechRadar that OnePlus has been "actively considering a smartwatch since last year." This doesn't tell us much about what to expect from the OnePlus Watch, but it does suggest that a smartwatch by the Chinese tech company is in the works.

Interestingly, the leak and listing come just as Oppo announced the Oppo Watch, a smartwatch with a design very similar to the Apple Watch. [The OnePlus 8 Pro has many similar features to the Oppo Find X2 Pro, and both are effectively subsidiaries of BBK Electronics. Since both companies share the same production line and supply chain, it is not surprising that OnePlus is working on a smartwatch after Oppo has prepared a smartwatch.

Regardless of the crossover, the OnePlus Watch should bring something a little special to the smartwatch arena: the Apple Watch 6 is expected to be announced in September, with a new design (no more Digital Crown), more powerful specs and a host of wellness and health features, including the ability to monitor mental health.

The Apple Watch 6 is expected to launch at the same time as the iPhone 12. However, based on these early leaks, it is unlikely that we will see the OnePlus Watch for some time. So there is time to come up with plenty of features to challenge the Apple Watch 6 for the title of best smartwatch.
