Google Pixel5 Launch Looks Imminent — Here's the proof

Both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G will be coming soon, probably by the end of the month. And according to regulatory filings, the fall launch of Google's next smartphones will proceed as planned.

9to5Google has discovered FCC regulatory filings for both the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. Handset manufacturers register their devices with regulators, and when these filings appear, it usually means that a launch is imminent.

It is no secret that Google has the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G in the pipeline; when the Pixel 4a was launched in August, Google announced that both models were in development; the Pixel 4a 5G was even confirmed to be priced at $499, but the price of the Pixel 5 has not yet not yet been revealed.

At least one rumor predicts that the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G will appear on September 30, and a post on the French-language Google blog suggests October 8 as the date when pre-orders for the new phones will open.

The Pixel 5 may be Google's flagship phone, but it is not likely to have the flashy features of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or the rumored iPhone 12, as Google is trying to keep the price down The Pixel 5 will feature Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 765G chip is expected to replace the system-on-chip. This chip has less processing power, but it has a 5G modem. Google may also ditch the Soli sensor introduced in last year's Pixel 4 and put an end to gesture-based Motion Sense controls.

As for the Pixel 4a 5G, think of it as an XL version of Google's budget smartphone that includes 5G connectivity. It will have a larger display and a Snapdragon 765G chipset, but will have the same lone rear camera that the Pixel 4a uses.

A 9to5Google report notes that filings with the FCC contain other hints about features planned for the Pixel 5. These filings mention WPT, meaning wireless power transfer. This means that the Pixel 5 will be able to provide reverse charging to other wireless devices, similar to the Wireless PowerShare feature on recent Samsung flagship models.
