Google Pixel5 just leaked with new photos, and there's a big surprise

The Google Pixel 5 has appeared on Twitter, and it looks like we can check out the new "S" version of the phone when it launches.

Mexican tech blogger Jose Antonio Ponton tweeted the following two images that he claims are the real deal of Google's upcoming flagship phone (via Max Weinbach). One of the images is of the phone's "About" page, which actually shows some interesting details.

This information page indicates that the handset is named "Pixel 5s". We have heard previously that there will be no larger Pixel 5 XL this time around, but this is the first we have seen of the 5s model, which could be more powerful and full-featured compared to the basic 5

. For example, Google may be making a version of the Pixel 5 that runs on carrier partner Verizon's 5G network and a version that runs on the more common sub-6GHz standard, avoiding cramming both compatibilities into one model. Such a move would save space in the chassis and reduce extra expense for the user.

The phone's display has a punch hole for a single selfie camera, similar to the Pixel 4a released last month. The panel it is embedded in is likely to be another OLED screen like the one we saw earlier and will reportedly be 6 inches in size.

A fingerprint scanner for unlocking is visible on the back; the Pixel 4 used Face Unlock with the Soli radar chip, but Google appears to have dropped that technology in favor of other improvements to the phone, such as shrinking the bezel and adding a larger battery.

Also visible on the back is a square camera patch with what looks like two camera sensors. For comparison, the Pixel 4 used a combination of a main camera and a telephoto camera for the rear camera, which is the first time Google has moved away from using only one camera.

One might expect the same this time around, but recent reports suggest that Google will replace the telephoto sensor with an ultrawide sensor. That would put the Pixel 5 at a hardware disadvantage against some of its rivals, but in line with other basic flagship phones like the rumored iPhone 12.

We also see that the phone uses Android version "R," the codename for Android 11. This is not surprising, as Google always puts the latest version of its operating system on its phones first.

The Pixel 5, along with the Pixel 4a 5G, is expected to launch later this month, at least based on leaks we have seen. Google usually holds a big Made by Google event to show off the new Pixel and other fresh hardware, but given the disruption caused by this year's coronavirus, it's hard to make predictions.
