Pre-orders for the PS5 may start this week — here's what we know

Details regarding the PS5's price and release date may finally be released this week.

This is according to a now-deleted tweet (but screenshot by TheSixthAxis) from UK retailer Game. The tweet was sent yesterday (September 8) from Game's account in Guildford, Surrey, claiming that a PS5 event is taking place this week and assuring those who pre-ordered that there will be more news soon.

What is not clear from this tweet is whether it is based on information sent directly from Sony to Game stores or other leaked information. For example, according to a recent 4Chan leak, there is a Sony event this week, but Sony itself has stated that there is no PS5 announcement planned for this week, and that the focus is instead on the PlayStation VR platform.

Of course, this tweet is based on authentic insider information and could be accurate. However, it could also be based on the assumption that Sony must announce the price of the PS5 soon. New consoles are often released in November, and thanks to the Black Friday and holiday sales season, sales can be ahead of schedule. This leaves little time for Sony to announce the price of the new console to the public.

As for the price itself, the consensus is that the PS5 will cost between $500 and $600, with the digital edition, which omits the disc drive, being $100 cheaper: $499 for the Xbox Series X and $299/£250 for the Xbox Series S Compared to the basic price of the PS5, the PS5 could lose sales to gamers looking to move to the next generation of consoles for the smallest possible price.

Game Guildford's tweets aren't the only fascinating news about the PS5; Amazon Australia recently uploaded box art of a PS5 game.

If the game has been announced and is ready for pre-order, it makes sense for Amazon to put in place a system. However, while this tells us that an announcement is imminent, we cannot guarantee that it will be this week, especially since Sony has made it clear that we should not expect anything.
