God of War 2: Ragnarok Trailer, PS5 Release Date and What We Know So Far

Sony announced God of War 2: Ragnarok at the end of its September PS5 showcase. While that title may not be official yet, it's not unreasonable to think that this supposed sequel to 2018's "God of War" should be called that.

God of War 2: Ragnarok was only announced with the words "Ragnarok is coming" along with a Spartan logo wrapped in an icy shade of blue. And since no month was announced, would probably go all the speculation over a widely announced release window (which we bet later than earlier).

And not a single frame of game footage was shown. But then, it would seem that the game is not yet ready to be unveiled.

Santa Monica Studios' 2018 reboot of God of War is an incredibly polished game that has since lived up to its hype. For this reason, it is unlikely that the development studio will show off any game footage until it is much closer to completion.

The very short trailer showed the year, not the date, 2021. We are not going to wait for frostbite to set in.

There is no stand-alone video in this trailer tease, so we have to embed the entire showcase. The trailer for God of War 2 begins at 1:43:27.

What we can take from this announcement, however, is that the upcoming God of War is a direct sequel to the 2018 game. Spoiler alert: The game ends with the sowing of the ancient Norse tale of Ragnarok, where Thor, the Norse god of thunder, appears in Kratos' home, seemingly seeking revenge for Kratos' murder of his sons and brother Balder.

Given this, we can expect that in God of War 2: Ragnarok, Kratos and his son Atreus (who happens to be the trickster god Loki) will travel through nine realms not seen in the 2018 game. This means that Svartalfheim and Asgard, as well as other regions, will likely be included.

And combat can be expected to be a satisfying mix of charismatic rapid-fire and surprising heft, perhaps further deepened by the advanced tactile feedback of the dual-sense controllers.

That's about all we can infer from this brief announcement. But more details will be revealed next year.
