Sony finally revealed the price of the PS5 on September 16, but also quietly revealed the price of its Pulse 3D Wireless headset with 3D sound support.

Designed to take advantage of Sony's new Tempest 3D AudioTech, the Pulse 3D Wireless headset is intended to provide advanced surround sound customized for the human ear and will cost $99. A release date has not yet been set, but it is expected to be available at the same time as the PS5 on November 12.

Considering that the PlayStation Platinum Wireless headset for PS4 costs over $130, the price of the Pulse 3D Wireless headset seems like a bargain. In particular, we expect more advanced audio features and, to our eyes, a nicer design.

Sony said that the 3D audio technology will work with existing audio equipment and that algorithms will find the best way to provide immersive sound. The technology will effectively track more sound sources than ever before in a game, providing a richer soundscape than previous consoles. However, to take full advantage of 3D audio, hardware configured to work with Tempest 3D AudioTech is required.

Currently, the only way to get that around the launch of the PS5 is probably with the Pulse 3D Wireless headset. Expect more audio devices to have 3D audio capabilities, but that will likely be in 2021, after the PS5 is well underway.

Microsoft's Xbox Series X will not have custom audio technology, but it will support Dolby Atmos. This is a cinema-grade audio standard, so if the Xbox Series X is paired with a powerful Atmos-certified audio system, it will deliver powerful sound. Whether it can compete with Sony's Tempest 3D AudioTech, however, remains to be seen.
