Despite living in the age of digital media, the PS5 digital version seems to be in much smaller supply than the disc version. [In particular, some retailers appear to have started taking pre-orders for the PS5 earlier than expected and more abruptly. However, a UK retailer source told Eurogamer that the number of digital PS5 consoles is much smaller.

Both models have proven to be very popular, but there is a huge demand for the Digital Edition. The lack of a disk drive makes it thinner, and the Digital Edition is definitely better looking. It is also priced at $399, much cheaper than the standard PS5, which costs $499.

However, according to a retailer source, the stock allocation for the Digital Edition is only 25%, compared to 75% for the console with the disk drive. Another source said that 20 percent and 80 percent are in stock. This is not just a habit of UK retailers; in the US, the inventory allocation for the Digital Edition was as low as 13 percent; according to Ars Technica, it was as high as 33 percent.

With the popularity of streaming games and digital editions exploding in recent years, it would not be unreasonable to expect inventory of the PS5 console and digital editions to be comparable. However, even though Sony did not suggest that the supply of Digital Editions would be low, this did not appear to be the case.

Tom's Guide editor-in-chief Michael Andronico said that he had his eye on the Digital Edition PS5, but that it seemed to sell out the fastest. However, he has not pre-ordered either PS5 version.

Tom's Guide may disagree on the design of the PS5, but they seem to mostly agree that the digital edition is better. Given the high demand for the digital edition, it is surprising that it is not as well stocked as the disc version.

Cynics will argue that Sony is trying to get people to buy the disc version of the PS5 because it makes $100 more per unit than the digital edition. Some speculate that the digital edition may have been priced lower than the Xbox Series X, which costs $499, as opposed to the Xbox Series S, which costs $299.

Sony has apologized for the pre-order confusion but has yet to comment on the situation. More pre-orders for both consoles are expected, but they are likely to sell out quickly; check out our PS5 pre-order guide to make sure you get your hands on the PS5 when it launches on November 12.
