Massive Samsung Galaxy S20FE specification Leak— Here are the pros and cons

The Galaxy S20 FE is just a few days away from launch, but thanks to a new video we can already see it in action.

The video comes courtesy of Jimmy Is Promo, who has already sent out several S20 FE leaks. This is the first time he has seen this phone on video and in action. But while the price is said to be affordable, it's clear that Samsung cut some corners to get there.

Here are the pros and cons of the Galaxy S20 FE based on this latest leak.

Samsung has given the S20 FE a design more similar to the Galaxy Note 20 than the Galaxy S20. Since other Samsung flagships and many rival models use glass on the back, Samsung risks making this phone feel like a watered-down handset, even if it could cut costs and weight by using plastic.

The triple camera array of the Galaxy S20 FE is nearly identical to the Galaxy S20. The main sensor and ultra-wide sensor are the same 12 MP model, but the telephoto sensor has been changed.

The 64MP sensor with 3x hybrid zoom of the original S20 has been replaced by a smaller 8MP sensor with 3x optical zoom and up to 30x hybrid zoom. Although the resolution is smaller, we expect telephoto photos to look better now that the zoom is optical instead of mostly digital.

The front camera is also different, as it is a much larger 32MP resolution instead of Samsung's standard 10MP front camera. While still smaller than the Galaxy S20 Ultra's 40MP front sensor, 32MP is large enough for high-resolution selfies and low-light photography when using the low-resolution pixel binning mode.

Like its cousins, the Galaxy S20 FE has Dolby Atmos-tuned stereo speakers. Unfortunately, it also shares the lack of a 3.5mm jack. This means you'll need a USB-C dongle to connect wired headphones, or invest in the best wireless earbuds or the best wireless headphones.

As seen in the video, the S20 FE's 6.5-inch display sits between the 6.2-inch S20 and the 6.9-inch Galaxy S20 Ultra. While we consider 6.5 inches to be a large phone, offering a middle ground should satisfy both users who want as much display as possible and users who want a device that is easy to use with one hand.

The FE's display has some drawbacks compared to Samsung's other flagship models. It only has FHD resolution instead of the superior QHD that other models have, and in addition, the bezels seem to be larger than any other S20 model in the video images.

But there are still advantages: the FE has a smaller central punch-hole notch for the selfie camera, allowing more of the screen to be used. Some users may also prefer the ease of use of the flat panel, rather than the slightly curved panel of the original S20. In addition, the Galaxy S20 FE maintains the smooth 120 Hz refresh rate that Samsung uses on its other flagships and should feel as premium as its siblings.

The Galaxy S20 FE, like the other Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, runs on Samsung's latest Android 10-based operating system, One UI 2.5. This is a good Android skin, as long as you don't mind having Samsung's bloatware hanging around in your app library. You can also expect a quick upgrade to Android 11 once Samsung finishes its One UI 3.0 efforts.

The chipset is the same as the original S20 series, a Snapdragon 865. Storage capacity remains the same at 128GB, but memory is reduced to 6GB RAM instead of the 12GB of the other S20s; Jimmy speculates that an 8GB/256GB option will also be available.

The battery is the same size as the Galaxy S20 Plus, 4,500 mAh. This should last for a full day of intensive use with plenty of time to spare. It can also use Samsung's Wireless PowerShare wireless charging, which allows it to wirelessly power other devices.

Jimmy reiterates his assertion that the price of this phone will be around $699 to $750, depending on the storage options chosen. Even taking into account the downgrade of the standard Galaxy S20, a savings of over $250 should be a strong draw for users who choose this phone over the basic Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Note 20. We also expect the Galaxy S20 FE to be a strong competitor to the iPhone 12 and OnePlus 8T, which are also expected to arrive in the next month or so.

Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on Wednesday, September 23. Given that its tagline is "Unpacked for every fan," a Galaxy S20 Fan Edition seems inevitable.
