iOS 14 is good news for Gmail fans: if you've always wanted Gmail to be the default email app on your iPhone, it's finally here and easy to enable If you prefer to use another email app, that's still fine
The system-wide default web browser and mail app is one of the iOS features we've been waiting for the most (second only to widgets, which came in iOS 14) And now all we need is for our favorite mail apps and web browsers to be updated to support this option
Thankfully, Gmail has been updated to support this iOS 14 option Unfortunately, however, it is not where you would expect it to be When I first looked around for this feature in the Mail and Safari sections of the Settings app, I found nothing
Instead, this setting is in each app's own section of Settings The other major email app that adds a default option is Outlook For web browsers, you can stop using Safari and go with Chrome or Firefox
I switched this option yesterday because I think the Gmail app does a better job of finding old emails than the Mail app Now, when I open an email link in any app, such as tapping someone's email address, Gmail will start composing the message
We are a little disappointed that Apple has started light on the types of apps that can get the new default option We expect to see reminders (Due, Todoist, Things), calendar (Fantastical), and weather (Dark Sky, Hello Weather, Carrot Weather) as new defaults in the future This is probably a test to see how much demand there is from users for new default apps, and it is possible that these changes will be made in iOS 15

A check mark next to the selected app means the default has been set As we have reported, a bug in iOS 14 is resetting the default apps when you reboot your phone We hope this will be fixed soon
