PS5 can supercharge PS4 games — Here's how

Sony's PS5 may include a "boost mode" that will improve the performance of PS4 games running on the next-generation console.

At least according to a Boost Mode reference found in the PS Store source code discovered by a Reddit user, this is believed to maximize the power of the PS5. It is believed that this will allow the PS5 to unleash its power on 99 percent of the PS4 games that the PS5 promises to support.

In March, PS5 architect Mark Cerny detailed how the PS5 will feature PS4 Pro and PS4 Legacy mode, which will downscale the GPU to emulate older console hardware for compatibility with older games Cerny said, noted that some PS4 games may be too powerful for the PS5 to handle.

However, it would not be unreasonable to expect PS4 games to run with improved performance on the PS5 hardware, even if the PS5 hardware is scaled down. With that in mind, Boost mode will most likely be used for games that can take advantage of the PS5's power.

It is unclear whether Boost Mode will be the default setting for PS5 PS4 games or a switchable option. It is also unclear what will be possible.

PS4 games should expect better frame rates, such as 60 fps or 120 fps. This made even difficult games even more difficult to play. However, an increase to 60 fps would allow for smoother play and, as a result, would make it easier to time dodging and swinging weapons at the last possible moment.

We expect PS5 to run PS4 games at native 4K resolution. However, depending on the severity of backwards compatibility, even with the PS5's 10.28 teraflops of graphics power, running older games at such resolutions could cause frame rate issues. The source code stated, "Unexpected game behavior may occur while playing this PS4 game on a PS5 console." The statement was.

In other words, Boost mode is an unusual behavior, such as not being able to access the game's online content or multiplayer mode It is possible that this feature is used by people who do not mind encountering such unusual behavior. Alternatively, boost mode may allow PS4 games to run at higher frame rates while rendering at 1440p or 1080p resolution, as on the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Interestingly, as of this writing, the PS5 backward compatibility page is gone, suggesting that Sony is preparing a new set of content to explain in more detail how older generation games will run on the PS5 PS Plus Collection will be offered. This is a series of PS4-exclusive games that will be offered on PS5 as part of the PS Plus subscription. However, it is not yet known if these will be enhanced in any special way, so perhaps Sony is poised to reveal more about that.

Comparatively, the Xbox Series X will be a backward-compatible gaming monster, and is set to run games dating back to the original Xbox. Many of these games will be rendered in native 4K and will run at a minimum of 60 fps. However, given that the console will not be ready for "Halo Infinite" before its November 10 launch, it is not surprising that Microsoft is going all out for backward compatibility.

Speaking of launch, pre-orders for the PS5 are now open, as are those for the Xbox Series X and Series S.

The PS5 will be available for purchase on November 10.
