iPhone SE3 Just Leaked — but there's Some bad news

Apple took four years to release a successor to the first-generation iPhone SE, but the next model could arrive sooner than that.

A tweet from Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants sheds light on Apple's smartphone plans after iPhone 12, claiming that Cupertino plans to launch the third-generation iPhone SE in spring 2022.

According to a chart based on information from investment firm Mizuho Securities shared by Young, the next iPhone SE will reportedly feature a 6.1-inch LCD screen and dual cameras. However, it will not feature Face ID, but instead will have a fingerprint sensor.

Furthermore, this entry-level device will only support sub-6GHz 5G, skipping the faster millimeter wave 5G technology that will likely be exclusive to the Pro series iPhones for the time being.

If many of these specs sound familiar, they probably are: the 2022 iPhone SE closely resembles the soon-to-be discontinued iPhone 11, with a 6.1-inch LCD screen and a 12-megapixel wide and ultra-wide lens on the back.

According to Young's tweet, the next iPhone SE will actually reuse the iPhone 11's camera, just like Apple's first and second generation iPhone SEs based on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 8, respectively, and after a year's absence, the iPhone 11 is the SE model, adding legitimacy to the theory that it will be resurrected as a model.

The rest of Young's tweets reveal a variety of information surrounding the iPhone 13 series. iPhone 13 series will reportedly again consist of four devices, just like the iPhone 12 line, once again all 120 Hz ProMotion displays and the more expensive Pro variant. This is a feature that Apple has long been rumored to introduce with the iPhone 12 Pro, but the latest information on the matter suggests that the company has now decided to shelve the faster refresh rate panel.

Overall, the upcoming iPhone SE sounds like a logical step forward and perhaps the last reaper of the once classic, home button and large bezel iPhone. 6.1-inch iPhone SE has made its compact form factor a key part of its appeal. It seems a bit too big for a series of devices that have always been an important part of their appeal, but at this rate, who knows how huge the average smartphone will be in 2022.
