Selfie cams under displays may be the wave of the future. But that future apparently does not include next year's Samsung Galaxy S21.

This is from The Elec, which reports that Samsung will not release a smartphone with an under-display camera until late 2021. This would rule out a flagship smartphone, which Samsung plans to release next spring.

The under-display camera is a long-awaited feature for smartphones, which will allow handset makers to include full-screen displays without the punch hole or notch to accommodate a front camera. and Xiaomi's next smartphone is expected to adopt this feature as well.

In contrast, Samsung's smartphone uses an Infinity O display, which means that there is a circular cutout in the panel for the front camera. This minimizes the phone's bezel, but hinders the flow of the screen. This is especially noticeable when the background of the application being used is white.

The under-display camera was rumored to be a killer feature for the Galaxy S21, but The Elec reports that Samsung is delaying this feature due to low production. Instead, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, rumored to be the successor to the just-released Galaxy Z Fold 2, will likely be Samsung's first device to feature an under-display camera. This model will not appear until late next year.

There is not much information on how the foldable phone will take advantage of this form factor, but at least it means that Samsung is not ready to give up on pursuing this type of camera.

Rumors surrounding the Galaxy S21 currently indicate that the new flagship will arrive in February or March 2021, much like this year's Galaxy S20. Early leaks suggest that it may also support an S Pen like the Galaxy Note models, but nothing has been confirmed on that front yet.

Samsung may go the traditional route with the Galaxy S21's front camera, but there may be changes in the rear camera arrangement. Previous Galaxy S21 rumors have indicated that Samsung will use a 180MP main camera and two telephoto lenses.
