Hands-on videos of the PS5 have been circulating online from Japan, and one of them reveals a strange bolt on the side of the console.

The nut, spotted by 4Gamers, can be seen by peering into the upper right side of the PS5's chassis. How it is easily accessible and what it is for has not yet been explained, but there are several theories.

First, the PS5's internal storage is set to be expandable, which is just as well considering that the SSD only has 825 GB of space. Therefore, this bolt could be the point at which users remove part of the PS5's monolithic shell to access the expansion slots.

The PS4's hard drive could be replaced with a higher-capacity drive if users were willing to keep the screwdriver busy. So it is not unreasonable to expect Sony to expect the same from future PS5 users.

However, the Xbox Series X offers a very simple plug-and-play system, and storage can easily be expanded by 1 TB with an external dedicated SSD. However, these are expected to be expensive upgrades.

Alternatively, the odd nut could be for removing the PS5's white cover and installing a new panel. Sony has previously said that the PS5 will be a customizable console, but whether that is something users can do or the domain of professional modders remains to be seen.

Given the PS5's vents, Nat could also remove parts of the chassis to clean dust that might be blocking the console's fans, increase fan speed, and increase volume. Early hands-on demonstrations show that the PS5 is fairly quiet, which we imagine is tied to the clear airflow into the console's powerful interior.

Talking about old-school consoles, namely the greats from Nintendo and Sega, nuts like this one suggest that the console can be attached to some attractive accessories. The Nintendo 64, for example, had a port underneath that could be connected to a regional game slot. However, given that the PS5 appears to have everything needed for a powerful entertainment machine, it seems unlikely that this nut would be intended for such an elaborate expansion.

The PS5 is scheduled to launch on November 12 in the U.S. and November 19 in the U.K. It won't be long before we get a proper look at Sony's next-generation console; pre-orders for the PS5 are now open, but they sold out quickly.
