PS5 can trounce Xbox Series X to cooling — here's the reason

The Xbox Series X and PS5 are just a few days away from launch. But thanks to journalists who have spent time with both consoles, some important information has already been released.

Earlier this week, the Japanese press posted their first hands-on impressions of the PS5, noting how quiet and cool the console runs. Although it now appears to have been removed, Ken Bogard of Jeux Video praised the Xbox Series X's cooling system for its quietness, but noted that the console still generates a lot of heat.

"The Series X is really hot! It doesn't make any noise, but it's fucking hot! The console is giving off crazy amounts of heat. It's almost like a fireplace shaft" (translation by VGC).

"Now I can heat up my apartment."

Interestingly, Bogart did not have access to any Xbox Series X games, so the heat was generated when playing backward compatible titles and browsing the navigation menus.

Giant Bomb co-host Jeff Bakalar also observed heat even in standby mode, commenting that the console's storage expansion card was "burning" and asking why it was so hot.

"Here's where it gets crazy: ...... This is just plugged in in standby mode behind me, you guys, the whole thing is running a little hot," Bakalr said.

"Like a lot of other gaming consoles that have been doing something while they're not in use, maybe this one's doing something while it's not in use that requires heat removal.

Bakalr and his co-hosts stressed that this is pre-release hardware, so things could change by launch day. That said, they noted that the Xbox One X can still put out a noticeable amount of heat when in standby mode.

Tom Warren of The Verge also attended a hands-on with the Xbox Series X and tweeted that it is very unlikely that Microsoft would send out a console with cooling issues. However, due to the embargo, he said he could not discuss the console and its heat dissipation in any further detail. [Of course, things may change once people are able to use next generation games on the Series X. The consensus seems to be that the fans are incredibly quiet when playing older games, but things may not stay that way as the console's hardware gets pushed further.

So far, the evidence clearly suggests that the PS5 will not have this problem. As more people play games on the PS5, things will undoubtedly change, but for now, it still trumps the Xbox when it comes to heat.
