WhatsApp is getting a huge update - and Zoom should be worried

In this age where video calling has replaced most face-to-face interactions, it is hard to believe that some of the most popular mobile clients are so poorly supported on the desktop

WhatsApp is one such client, which currently does not allow video or voice calls on desktop or web clients But that may change

An update to WhatsApp reveals that video and voice calls will be available on desktop and web clients in the near future

According to WABetaInfo, version 220437 of the WhatsApp web client has a revamped user interface Among these changes are buttons that allow users to make voice and video calls without having to switch to their cell phones Group calls have also been added, and more screen space is now available

WABetaInfo also has a screenshot of the call feature, and from the looks of it, a dedicated pop-up window appears for calls That way you can see what is going on without having to keep the main client open

Apparently this update could be released in the next few weeks, but until there is an official announcement from WhatsApp, it is not guaranteed However, given that both features are nearly complete, it would make no sense for WhatsApp to delay the update Especially given the growing competition from companies like Zoom

Also, Zoom has just adopted end-to-end encrypted calling in its new beta program WhatsApp, which encrypts everything by default, must roll this out before other companies beat them to it
