iPhone12 disassembly confirms battery bad news

The October 23 launch of the iPhone 12 is just one day away, and reviews and test results for Apple's new phone are already appearing on the Internet. And while the iPhone 12 has received positive reviews, there is one area where it has been criticized, including by Tom's Guide: the iPhone 12's battery life.

Our iPhone 12 battery test results point to 5G consuming a lot of power. But there may be another issue, as discovered in a recent teardown video of the iPhone 12.

That video, posted by Hic Tech, shows off all the iPhone 12's internal parts for anyone to see before picking up the new phone. The full teardown is certainly informative enough, but what is really intriguing is the smaller battery in the body - even smaller than the one in the iPhone 11.

The battery is not significantly smaller, but there is a noticeable enough difference. Past teardowns suggest that the iPhone 11 has a 3,110 mAh battery. Apple has not officially announced the battery size, but rumors suggest that the iPhone 12 will have a 2,815 mAh or 2,775 mAh power pack. Either size would be a drop from the iPhone 11's maintained power increase.

The iPhone 12's smaller internals are as expected. The overall size is smaller: 5.8 x 2.8 x 0.29 inches for the new model, compared to the iPhone 11's 5.9 x 3 x 0.33 inches. Its teardown video shows that many of its internal parts have been downsized, allowing for a slimmer profile.

Battery life, however, appears to be one of the casualties. The phone's battery is tested by letting the user surf the web via a cellular connection with the screen brightness set to 150 nits until the phone turns off. There are other ways to measure battery life, but this allows us to compare the lifespan of different cell phones.

The iPhone 12's test time of 8 hours 25 minutes is below the average for smartphones; when the ability to connect to a 5G network is turned off, the iPhone 12's test time improves to 10 hours 23 minutes.

Still, there is only so much 5G can account for. iPhone 11, despite having a larger battery and not being connected to a 5G network, lasted 11 minutes and 16 seconds.

This information makes the iPhone 12 teardown interesting. If you don't mind short battery life, you may find the iPhone 12 to be rather well suited to your needs.
