iPhone12 owners will not be able to get 5G on this carrier

One of the big selling points of the iPhone 12 series is the fact that it is the first iPhone to support 5G. Given that carriers and tech companies are constantly touting the benefits of 5G, this is a pretty significant announcement.

However, 5G is still a relatively new technology and has caused problems for some. For example, iPhone 12 owners who use Google Fi are currently unable to access 5G services.

9to5Google notes that Google has already hyped Fi's 5G coverage, promising to offer nationwide 5G connectivity included in all plans. However, it is worth pointing out that Google Fi, an MVNO, is actually touting T-Mobile's 5G network.

Owners of Android phones could connect to Fi's 5G network starting in early 2019, and 5G phones could seamlessly connect to the carrier's 5G service. iPhone 12 owners expected a similar experience, but this proved not to be the case.

Google's website lists a number of phones designed for the Fi network, but notes that "phones compatible with T-Mobile's 5G network will work on Fi's network." iPhone 12 will work on T-Mobile's 5G network, but will not work on Google Fi's network. Users also report that they could not even manually connect to 5G in the phone's "voice and data" settings, forcing many users to begin asking questions. What's going on?

Unfortunately, this does not appear to be a simple glitch in the system; Google confirmed to 9to5Google that Fi 5G is not supported on the iPhone 12 - but work is underway to try to fix the problem.

Google has not actually explained what the problem is, or when it might be resolved, only that it will update customers via its help center. So it looks like users who are using the iPhone 12 on Fi will have to wait patiently, and those who are thinking about getting an iPhone 12 for use on Fi may want to reconsider. At least for the time being.
