This big PS5 monopoly has not come to PS4

I don't know how many people were hoping that "Ratchet & Clank" would be released on PS4: I don't know how many people were hoping that "Rift Apart" would be released on PS4, but whoever you are, you just heard some disappointing news. The latest Ratchet & Clank adventure will be released within the next few months, but only for PS5. To relive the Lombax and robot duo's journey through the fast-loading dimensional rift, you'll need Sony's newest gaming console.

The information comes from Insomniac Games' Twitter account and is a brief, straightforward response to a question about platform availability. User @Spidey889 asked if Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart would be available on PS4. An Insomniac representative replied, "It's a PS5 exclusive."

On the other hand, Insomniac has never indicated that the game will be released on PS4, and there is no particular reason to believe that the game will be released on Sony's older consoles. On the other hand, Sony has been promoting Insomniac's other new title, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as a game for PS5 for several months. Of course, neither company said "Miles Morales" was a PS5 exclusive title, but it took a long time before it became clear that it would be released on PS4.

There is also the question of whether "Ratchet & Clank" will be released on PS4: Rift Apart is feasible on PS4 hardware; "Miles Morales" uses a PS4 game ("Marvel's Spider-Man") as a base ), so it makes sense for Insomniac to make the PS4 version available without having to rebuild the whole thing from scratch. However, the PS5's powerful SSD and fast load times seem to be an integral part of Rift Apart's design, with Ratchet and Clank leaping through dimensional ports and into the fully rendered world in a matter of seconds; the same process on the PS4 would probably interrupt the flow of gameplay would take long enough to interrupt the flow of gameplay.

There may be some solace, however, for those who do not own a PS5, which is a long, long way off. Sony tends to stream many exclusive titles through its PlayStation Now service, at least for a limited time. Eventually, PlayStation Now may offer PS5 games: Rift Apart is a prime candidate. If that happens, "Rift Apart" will be playable not only on PS5, but also on PS4 and PC. However, waiting is not a surefire strategy, as it is not expected for at least a few more years.

For now, the only way to play Ratchet & Clank is to play Rift Apart on PS4 or PC: to play Rift Apart, you need a PS5. That has been the case for some time, but it's good to have at least some clarity.
