Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will open tomorrow (November 6). But even before Apple begins accepting orders for the two remaining iPhone 12 models, wireless carriers are already touting deals that promise big savings. In the case of the smaller iPhone 12 mini, that means getting Apple's newest smartphone for free.

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all running promotions that allow customers to get the iPhone 12 mini for free with bill credits. Of course, each offer has its limitations, but if you use your card well, you can get the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini for free. AT&T's iPhone 12 mini campaign is the most straightforward. Both new and existing customers can get a $700 credit when they trade in an eligible device, buy a new iPhone on an installment plan, and sign up for an unlimited data plan with the carrier.

This $700 credit covers the exact price of the iPhone 12 mini, but can also be applied toward the purchase of the iPhone 12, including the iPhone 12 Pro Max. With the credit, the monthly payment for the iPhone 12 Pro Max drops to $13, saving $700 on the largest iPhone purchase.

AT&T spreads the billing credit over 30 months, and the trade-in must be in good standing to receive the full discount. But what makes AT&T unique is that the iPhone 12 best offer applies to customers who are changing services, not just current iPhone customers.

As for Verizon, the free iPhone 12 mini offer comes in the form of a buy one get one offer. Buy a new iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12, switch to Verizon, start a new service, or add a new line and get a second model for free. Both lines require you to sign up for an unlimited data plan, but you'll want to sign up anyway because you'll need an unlimited plan for the 5G traffic.

Verizon's BOGO promotion also applies to iPhone 12 Pro models, and you can get a second iPhone 12 Pro Max for free if you buy one model and either switch to Verizon, start a new service, or add a new line.

Existing Verizon customers who want to buy just one iPhone can sign up for an unlimited plan and trade in a device, including an iPhone 8 or later, to lower their monthly payment to $12. Verizon will apply that credit to their bill over 24 months. (Verizon will also offer a 30-month payment option on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.)

T-Mobile is not revealing details of its iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max promotions until pre-orders begin Friday. However, according to the carrier, T-Mobile customers can get the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 mini for free with a qualifying trade-in and a new line of service.

The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini is Apple's smallest iPhone, with an even more compact design than the iPhone SE. However, the iPhone 12 mini has an OLED screen and runs on the same A14 Bionic processor as the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup. In many respects, the iPhone 12 mini is identical to the iPhone 12, only with a smaller 6.1-inch display.
