PS5 has a serious new bug — what you Need to know

Like in the United States, the PS5 has been launched in the UK, but gamers are already encountering problems with the new console.

One of the main problems that PS5 users in the UK are encountering is the frustrating "download wait" bug. And it seems that Sony has yet to address this issue, leaving players who are trying to play the game for the first time on the new system high and dry.

The bug is the same one that has been affecting North American users since the game launched earlier this month in North America and November 12 in Japan. When users attempt to download a game, sometimes titles get stuck in a seemingly endless "waiting for download" loop, preventing them from completing the download necessary to enjoy the game.

For example, when Eurogamer's Wesley Yin-Poole tried to redeem a code for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Edition, the system tried to download both the PS5 and PS4 versions. Unfortunately, only the PS4 version was downloaded, and the PS5 version was subsequently unplayable; the PS5 version showed up in Yin-Poole's library, but remained unavailable for download.

This is not the first time users have reported experiencing this problem; there are several testimonials spread across the Internet, from Twitter to Reddit, complaining of the same issue. As of this writing, Sony has not commented on the issue, but users have usually found one solution that resolves the problem.

Factory resetting a gaming console after spending hours setting it up is less than optimal. If you need more than 100 GB to install multiple games on your system, and there is currently no way to move PS5 games to an external hard drive, this can be a fool's errand, and one that no one wants to willingly participate in. However, if people want to have the opportunity to download games, it is something that needs to be done.

This is far from the first wave of problems with the PS5; prior to the PS5's UK launch, some users reported problems with software corruption when trying to load games from their PS4 hard drives. At times, a "database rebuild" bug occurred, causing no small number of glitches.

Completing the steps suggested by PS5 to resolve the corrupted data solved the problem, but other users were not so lucky. Some users reported seemingly frivolous problems with not being able to enter rest mode while playing "Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered". Unfortunately, no official solution has yet been found.

Hopefully Sony will make some interim fixes to make this launch less frustrating for those fortunate early adopters.
