Apple Music works with Google Nest speakers — here's how to get it

Apple Music users may not need a HomePod mini after all. Google announced Monday that all of its Nest smart speakers and displays now support Apple's music streaming service.

According to an official blog post, starting today, many of the best Google Home speakers, including the new Google Nest Audio, can be used to steam content from Apple Music's vast library. This adds to the number of music services that Google Home already supports.

Not only can in-brand speakers like the Google Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Mini now play Apple Music, but third-party models like the Lenovo Smart Display 7 will also benefit from the integration.

We recently pitted the HomePod mini versus Amazon Echo versus Google Nest Audio, and one key difference that stood out for shoppers to consider was the availability of music service. Alexa users were already able to play Apple Music on their Echo devices, so today, the Google Assistant has gained another skill to level the playing field.

The HomePod mini, or the original HomePod, is undoubtedly designed to be ideal for Apple Music users, with features like handoff. However, there will also be Google Assistant users who enjoy Apple Music on their iPhones and other Apple devices. Such users now have the option to extend their use of Apple Music to their home speakers and displays.

To start streaming Apple Music on Nest and other Google Assistant-enabled speakers, you will need to link your Apple Music account in the Google Home app, just as you would with other music services. There is also an option to designate Apple Music as the default music streaming service.
