PS5 owners will have to wait to play Cyberpunk 2077 the right way

Today is the day that one of the most eagerly awaited games of the decade finally arrives. Yes, you can play Cyberpunk 2077 right now. At least, you will be if you download and install the first day patch.

Unfortunately, PS5 and PS4 users will be at a disadvantage.

The problem stems from the fact that the PC and Xbox versions of the game download differently than Sony's consoles; according to Marcin Mormot, global community lead for CD Projekt Red, the difference is 35-50 GB.

The first thing to note is that the Day One and Day Zero patches are the same, and as Mormot points out, everyone who preloaded the game on Xbox and PC already has that update installed. This is one of the advantages of skipping the disc. Unfortunately, as Gizmodo Australia points out, that option was not available to PlayStation gamers.

The question is, why do PlayStation consoles treat downloads so differently from Xbox and PC? With this update, the Xbox console may have downloaded only what it needed, while the PlayStation console may have overwritten existing files and downloaded everything from scratch. One Reddit user even suggested that the PS5 and PS4 file sizes may be larger because the Xbox defaults to English, while the PlayStation downloads files in all languages.

Honestly, we don't know for sure, and all of these suggestions are just speculation. Whatever the reason, PS5 users will not be able to play the patched version and will have to wait a long time.

Thankfully, if you have the physical version of the game, you can play it without installing the patch. However, you will be playing with everything the patch was intended to fix. Unfortunately, however, people cannot seem to determine if this method has reduced the amount they have to download.

On Reddit and Twitter, some people say over 100 GB, while others say closer to 45 GB. Given that both disks can hold a good amount of data, it makes sense that it is the latter. So, we hope that is the case, but in the end, the disk is still quite good.

Combine this new information with the fact that PS5 owners do not have "Quality Mode" for Cyperpunk 2077, which prioritizes resolution over frame rate, and these gamers are at a considerable disadvantage.

It is worth mentioning that not all PC platforms are created equal: those who preload Cyberpunk through CD Projekt Red's GOG platform will only need to download a few hundred additional megabytes to play the game. Those using Steam or the Epic games launcher will need to install an extra 2 to 3 GB. Fortunately, a few gigabytes isn't a big deal--not as much as 50 GB.
