Cyberpunk 2077 is a Disaster for PS4 and Xbox One - and It Gets Worse

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally here, and gamers can embark on the long-awaited journey to the Night City. Unfortunately, CD Projekt RED's RPG, despite years in the making, is plagued by a worrisome number of bugs and glitches that make players' first steps into this seedy metropolitan area a less than stellar experience.

No matter which platform players begin their journey on, they seem to run into problems. Simply put, things don't look good.

Since its initial launch on November 10 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, there have been mixed reports regarding the game's status as what can only be described as a hot mess. In terms of glitches, they range from minor annoyances, such as a choppy frame rate, to game-breaking bugs that have completely taken players out of the experience.

PC users are likewise dealing with their own difficult problems: according to Wccftech, even the RTX 3090 GPU cannot achieve an average of 60 fps at 4K resolution, even with graphics settings maxed out. When using Nvidia's proprietary DLSS technology in the game's performance mode, the RTX 3090 could only average 57.8 fps; without DLSS, it dropped to an abysmal 22 fps. This, coupled with the problems players have seen on each platform, made for a very concerning debut.

Additionally, there are already problems with a special in-game setting designed solely to turn off copyrighted music to protect Twitch streamers from potential DMCA takedowns. As a workaround, CD Projekt RED advises streamers to mute the music completely instead of potentially being subject to takedowns, and apologizes for the "inconvenience." This is more than a little annoying, given that a large part of Cyberpunk 2077 is music.

Oddly enough, outlets like The Verge are reporting that the Google Stadia version of the game, streaming via Google's servers, may currently be the best way to play the game, except for those who do not play on the latest and greatest PC GPUs or consoles The Verge reports that cloud gaming on Night City appears to be good, with a positive experience that "runs smoothly" even over Wi-Fi.

On the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game seems to be running fine, despite the fact that technically there is no next-gen version yet, although bugs keep popping up. Still, these versions are not unscathed, with the same problems here and there as the PC versions.

It's the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions that are holding everyone back; according to Eurogamer, the PS4 version suffers from a slow frame rate and texture pop-in when the screen is crowded. In addition to this, characters are pinned in T-poses, assets disappear, and the resolution drops erratically, making play on the previous generation consoles a bit disappointing.

No matter which platform you play on, the list of complaints seems to go on; CD Projekt RED initially distributed a first-day patch, but it seems that most of the problems have not been alleviated. We will have to wait for days to pass and new problems to arise - CDPR will have to keep pushing for additional fixes as the launch of Cyberpunk drags on.
