HDR in Cyberpunk 2077 is broken on PS5 and Xbox Series X — What to Do Next

Cyberpunk 2077 is plagued by yet another problem, this time adding to its list a seemingly flawed implementation of high dynamic range (HDR).

Players have noticed that Cyberpunk's HDR is less than functional, with low contrast and faded colors. And the problem is not limited to one platform, affecting games on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The HDTVTest video clearly shows poor HDR implementation regardless of which settings the player uses. The video even shows OLED TVs, which are usually capable of rendering deep blacks, lacking true blacks.

Indeed, HDTVTest suggests that HDR is more like upscaled SDR than rendering true HDR, and not a particularly good upscaling implementation.

This problem could be attributed to the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 is a cross-generational game and runs in backward compatibility mode on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, this does not explain the low HDR of the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X output in HDR by default. Also, Cyberpunk 2077 has an additional HDR toggle in the settings, but HDTV tests recommend leaving it off, as SDR currently provides a better experience.

This HDR issue adds to the long list of problems people have experienced with the game since its launch last week. Of course, the biggest problem is that the game is so confusing that it is basically unplayable on the original Xbox One and PS4 consoles.

Similarly, PS5 and PS4 owners have to wait longer to download the game's extensive first-day patch.

A number of other frustrating bugs and glitches have been pointed out by players, and developer CD Projekt Red has even offered refunds to those who want them.

If you are on the fence about purchasing Cyberpunk 2077, we suggest you wait a bit. The game clearly needs some work, so it's better to wait a few months.
