iPhone13 killer upgrade just leaked, 1 is a big surprise

The iPhone 12 ultimately decided against a high refresh display, but that's good news for those who have decided to wait for the iPhone 13. According to a report from Korean tech website The Elec, Apple has placed bulk orders with both Samsung Display and LG Display, with LG offering LTPO panels with higher refresh rates and constant lighting.

Two iPhone models next year will reportedly feature low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) displays. These features will likely be limited to the Pro model. The next iPhone is expected to be more battery efficient, but it is unclear if Apple will sacrifice battery life for the always-connected feature.

According to a source at Samsung Display, Apple expects to ship 160 to 180 million iPhones (both 12 and 13) with OLED panels. Currently, all iPhone 12 models have OLED displays, and the iPhone 13 is expected to do so as well.

Of this order, Samsung Display aims to supply 140 million displays; LG officials told The Elec that the Seoul-based company aims to supply enough OLED panels for 40 million iPhones, which is This is double the number of iPhones supplied this year.

Chinese manufacturer BOE Display is also aiming to supply Apple with 20 million panels. The Elec did not cite a source for BOE Display, and its figure is double the estimates of the site's Samsung and LG sources. s attempts to become part of the supply chain, but has failed twice in vetting the company's products. At the moment, BOE is unable to make LPTO panels with the same quality as its Korean rival.

BOE's involvement could also do the trick in another way: according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, BOE Technology Group sources some of its displays from Hefei-based Highbroad Advanced Material, which allegedly uses forced labor from the Uyghur ethnic minority in western Xinjiang. Apple, which has denounced forced labor in testimony before Congress, is one of the companies lobbying Congress to reject the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Apple argues that the provisions of the bill are too broad and that the law would hurt the company's supply chain.

Faster refresh displays are just one of the features said to be coming to the iPhone next year. The new models may also bring back Touch ID on some models, with the sensor either embedded in the power button or mounted below the display. We can also expect new Apple processors and improvements to the usual cameras.

Of course, it will be a while before we know what Apple's display plans are for the next iPhone. iPhone 12 debuted just a few months ago, and iPhone 13 will likely debut next September.
