The OnePlus watch is real and could be coming soon

Rumors of the OnePlus Watch have been slowly trickling out from the company over the past year. Now, however, the watch has been confirmed by the company's top executives.

In an interview OnePlus CEO Peta Lau conducted with Input, Lau revealed that the company is working with Google to create a smartwatch. This is the best indication yet that a OnePlus wearable is coming soon.

According to Lau's comments, OnePlus wants something more unique than the average smartwatch. They want something that works well with the company's other products, such as cell phones and OnePlus TV.

"What we are trying to do is work with Google to improve connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones to achieve better device interoperability across the ecosystem," Lau said.

Wear OS is a wearable device that accompanies Google's Android and is a logical choice for OnePlus to adopt. However, the standard version of the OS is apparently not good enough for OnePlus, and Lau stated that "Wear OS definitely has room for improvement."

OnePlus is well known for phones like the recent OnePlus 8T and already has audio products like the OnePlus Buds and Bullets Wireless 2. OnePlus' stable shareholder Oppo already makes smartwatches OnePlus' stablemate Oppo already makes smartwatches and could easily borrow components and features if it wanted to.

Lau's comments made no mention of design. The only design detail that seems certain from the leaks so far is that the OnePlus Watch will have a round face. This seems to be confirmed by a recent tweet from the company, which mentions the abandoned OnePlus Watch concept from 2015, but announces its eventual return.

OnePlus frequently teases products before finally releasing them, so we can expect more of these little tidbits when the company is ready to show something off. The next good opportunity for this to happen will probably be when the OnePlus 9 is announced, which according to recent rumors will be around mid-March.
