iPhone13 leak just confirmed the killer upgrade to fight the Galaxy S21

As good as the iPhone 12 series is, it lacks certain features that top-class Android phones have had for some time. However, the iPhone 13 seems to address that weakness in its most premium model.

ET News (via wccftech) reports that Apple will offer 120Hz OLED panels on "the top two of the four iPhone 13 models" (likely iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max). The higher refresh rate will allow for smoother scrolling as well as better movie playback and gameplay with supported content.

These dynamic panels should also help save battery life on higher-end iPhone 13 models.

LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) technology will allow the 120 Hz iPhone 13 Pro to dynamically adjust refresh rates from 120 Hz to 1 Hz. Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra already has a 120Hz LTPO display, and this technology should also be available on at least one of Samsung's Galaxy S21 models.

There were rumors that Apple would use a 120Hz ProMotion display in the iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max, but that did not happen. Apple was reportedly waiting for more LTPO panels to become available to better balance performance and battery life.

As reported by ET News, "Apple is understood to have decided to introduce LTPO-TFTs to offset the increased power consumption due to higher refresh rates, and the next iPhone display performance is expected to be noticeably better."

The addition of LTPO to the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max should help, as Apple's own iPhone 12 battery tests showed that Apple's latest lineup was not as good, especially with 5G turned on. In addition, Apple will reportedly provide a more efficient 5nm Qualcomm X60 modem for the iPhone 13 family.

Both Samsung and LG are said to be supplying OLED displays for the iPhone 13 lineup, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini and 6.1-inch iPhone 13 using the more traditional 60Hz LTPS panel and the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max will reportedly use a 120Hz LTPO OLED screen.

The only bad news from this ET News report is that there could be a "supply price increase." However, it is not clear whether Apple will pass that price increase on to shoppers.
