Resident Evil 7 can get this Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrade

Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil Village is not the only title Capcom is currently polishing. According to reliable leaker Dusk Golem, the company is also working on an upgrade patch for "Resident Evil 7" that will make the survival horror classic more intense on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PS5.

The leaker is known for revealing the existence of "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil Village" before Capcom. And when a leaker with such pedigree says something is "100% happening," it is safe to say that this is a rumor that should be taken very seriously.

Details are sparse, as one might expect from a 51-word tweet. For starters, it calls this an "update patch" rather than a remaster, suggesting that fans will not have to repurchase the game. From the news, it is unlikely to be very extensive, but we can expect graphical improvements and maybe even some fancy ray-tracing lighting effects.

However, the frame rate will not be improved in PS5; PSVR requires a smooth, solid frame rate to avoid unpleasant motion sickness.

Regarding virtual reality, Dusk Golem also mentioned Capcom's failure to mention virtual reality when introducing the world of Resident Evil 8. 'I know VR was in at some point,' he said. I don't know where we are now," Leak continued, stressing the need for a stable frame rate for a comfortable experience."

Another factor here is perhaps the fragmented nature of Sony's virtual reality products. Resident Evil 7 was released just four months after PSVR and was an integral (and frightening) part of the hardware's early adoption; PSVR is technically supported by PS5, but only through a backward compatibility mode. This makes for a somewhat odd situation where PS5 players can play VR titles like "Hitman 3," but must install the previous generation version.

The same may be true for "Resident Evil 8". After all, a version for PS4 is in the works. But it goes without saying that the need to make sure it works reliably at the level required for VR support is not as strong as it was in 2017; not only is VR no longer new or fresh, but the PS4 is officially last-gen, and there is no telling when PSVR 2 will be available.
