That's not because the watch looks identical to the Apple Watch. Many companies have already gone that route. It is because this watch costs $30,800.
That's right; this watch, made by H. Moser & Cie, can be had for close to $31,000. That's an absurd amount to pay for something that doesn't have at least four walls or four wheels.
Believe it or not, this is actually a follow-up to a previous Apple Watch-like device: H. Moser & Cie manufactured the first Swiss-made Alp Watch in 2016, shortly after the launch of the original Apple Watch. It was a $24,900 joke, and despite its Apple Watch-inspired design, it was a purely mechanical watch. It was not smart at all, it was a purely mechanical watch that just happened to have a rectangular watch face.
The same is true of the latest Swiss Alp watch, or "Final Upgrade," as it is called. It is a purely mechanical watch that happens to look exactly the same as the Apple watch. This time, however, the joke is taken a step further by making almost the entire dial black, making it look like a high-tech product.
The traditional second hand has also been replaced with a dial that makes the watch appear to be constantly buffering. Apparently a customer suggested this design, and if you want a watch that will keep you out of the startup loop, the Swiss Alp Watch may be the watch for you.
Of course, that's not all. The dial of this watch is colored in Banta Black. Vantablack is one of the darkest substances known to mankind, capable of absorbing up to 99.965% of visible light. In other words, this watch is quite extravagant.
H. Moser & Cie. uses the phrase "extremely rare" in its marketing because it reminds one of an eBay seller trying to sell a common item for much more than it is worth. Is this the case here? I have no idea, but smart or not, I would not pay this much for a watch.
Then again, I am clearly not the target audience here.
