While some of Cyberpunk 2077's bugs are just plain fun, others have potentially devastating consequences. Earlier this week, developer CD Projekt Red warned players not to install third-party mods or custom save files, citing an oversight that could allow hackers to plant nasty executable malware on your PC.

At the time, CD Projekt Red promised to issue a patch "ASAP," but only three days later it turned out that they had kept their word.

Hotfix 1.12 is a very intensive patch that, according to the developers, addresses the security risk by fixing both the buffer overrun issue and the removal or replacement of non-ASLR DLL files.

The update should be applied automatically on your platform, but make sure version 1.12 is applied before downloading any mods or save files, no matter how interesting they may seem. Once applied, it should be reasonably safe to download anything you're interested in, but it's worth seeing what others think before taking the plunge.

As one would expect from a game that sold 13 million copies before it went into chaos, Cyberpunk 2077's modding scene is pretty lively, with all sorts of add-ons to make your (PC) game more fun. There are modes that improve the general experience by making crowd behavior more realistic, improving the mini-map, and making cars and bikes feel more comfortable.

There are also other cyberpunk 2077 mods that make a very good-looking game (still on PC) even better by adding HDR, improving the rendering distance, and making the weather depressingly realistic.

And if you're looking for a whole new look, this cel-shaded reskin gives Night City and its inhabitants a Borderlands-esque feel; veterans of The Witcher can take it one step further, as in CD Projekt Red's previous hit You might want to take it a step further and go for a third-person perspective.

The point is, now that CD Projekt Red has announced that it's okay to go back to exploration, there are plenty of options. On the other hand, if you prefer official patches to getting your hands dirty yourself, you won't have to wait much longer. The developers have already promised to release a major bug-fix patch this month, and there are plans for free DLC ahead.
