Is a free VPN enough for the Super Bowl - and which one is the best?

Is a free VPN enough for the Super Bowl - and which one is the best?

It may not be what you were hoping for a year ago, but Super Bowl LV is finally happening, and for many people there are some excellent free options when it comes to getting a live stream of the Super Bowl. However, if you are not in a country that has the broadcast (or you are overseas and still want to catch your own coverage), you will need to change your location and use the best VPN to get access.

But the big question you might ask is whether it is possible to get both a stream and a free VPN.

We'll start by saying that free services can be super useful tools for casual privacy, but the area where they really struggle is streaming. Many providers intentionally limit streaming sites as an incentive to upgrade to a paid option.

Further down the page the options may offer usable solutions, and seeing as they are free, there is no harm in trying them out. But if you want guaranteed reliability, we always recommend going with a paid provider like ExpressVPN. And remember that all paid options below offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you won't end up out of pocket if you don't want to stick around.

Hotspot Shield's paid service is very fast and excellent for streaming. However, the free desktop version is limited to 500 MB of data per day, which is not enough for the Super Bowl.

However, Hotspot Shield's Chrome extension has no data limit and has a good chance of unblocking the CBS live stream. However, since the only secure servers available are in the U.S., it is certainly not possible to access the BBC's coverage.

However, it is difficult to test the effectiveness of these services on CBS streams. Since the free football broadcast is a one-time event, there is no guarantee that the Hotspot Shield extension will actually work. It is worth a try, but should not be the only option.

Windscribe is something of an outlier among free services. In our tests on this page, it worked well as an iPlayer VPN. We can't guarantee anything, but it bodes well for being able to unblock CBS, too.

What lets the free version of Windscribe down a bit is its slower speed. When tested, it only offered about 13Mbps on our 110Mbps line. In other words, there may be a little buffering, but it's a good free option.

ProtonVPN is another decent choice if you're after a free service for streaming soccer. When you sign up, you are automatically offered a free 7-day VPN trial.

However, even with that trial active, we were unable to access BBC iPlayer and the speeds were not class leading. We suspect it may work for CBS, but we can't say for sure until it starts streaming.

All in all, though, it is an excellent, private, free option and well worth checking out.
