MacBook Pro2021 Leak Reveals Major Design Overhaul

If you like the flat, boxy look of the iPhone 12, you'll probably like the upcoming MacBook Pro 2021, too.

According to a new note to investors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, seen by MacRumors, Apple is going all in on a new flat-sided product design. Given that we've been seeing mostly the same MacBooks for the past decade or so, this could herald one of the biggest changes to Apple's laptops in recent memory.

Kuo says: "As for the chassis design, the new model will drop the curved top and bottom of the existing model and adopt a flat-edge form-factor design like the iPhone 12."

From the top, the existing MacBook line already looks a bit like the iPhone 12, only with a different aspect ratio. However, the laptop's convex top and bottom surfaces do not mesh well with the recent iPhone design. The last model with a curved back was the iPhone 3GS in 2009.

However, older rumors refute Kuo's latest prediction: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says there will be "only minor design changes" between the current MacBook and the next-generation MacBook. However, he states that the MagSafe charging port will be reintroduced, a new display will be introduced, and the previously rumored mini LED panel may be adopted.

The biggest changes to the next-generation MacBook will all be within Cupertino's upcoming laptop. That is due to Apple's proprietary M1 chip, so far found in the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (13-inch). 2021's 13-inch models, or the new 16-inch MacBook Pro, will either feature the Apple M1 chip, or updated new version is expected to be used.

No new MacBook models are expected to be announced at Apple's upcoming Spring 2021 event. However, there are more specific rumors that the iMac 2021 will appear in March. The changes seen there may reflect what Apple has in store for the MacBook line later this year.
