Earlier this week, we heard news that accessory manufacturer dbrand is preparing to offer the black console that PS5 fans have been asking for over a year. All thanks to the console's removable exterior plate.

At the time, black plates were not available for sale, but things have changed: dbrand's Darkplates are now available for pre-order and are even cheaper than we had expected.

Previously, dbrand had sent out a survey to potential customers asking how much they would be willing to pay to have their PS5 polished to a glossy matte finish. The minimum price for the plate itself was $69, and the company asked if a $15 shipping fee was reasonable.

It was going to be quite an expensive upgrade. Fortunately, however, things are not that expensive.

If you purchase the PS5 disc version, the dark plate is officially $60, but is currently reduced as an introductory price. That is, $49, plus $5 for shipping. Unfortunately, plates for the PS5 digital edition are not currently available.

However, you can purchase a custom "middle skin" for both consoles. These are stickers that are placed in the middle of the console and come in seven different designs. Matte Black, Neon Yellow, and Matte White are monochromatic, while Robot Camo, Triple Black, Red Code, and Silicone are pattern designs.

The skins alone cost $19.95, but can be purchased as a set with a dark plate for $11.95. This is considerably higher than the previously advertised price of $0.69, but that's capitalism.

dbrand also made sure to add fine detail to the inside of each plate, as Sony did with the plate that came with the PS5. The only difference is that they replaced the Sony logo with their own "apocalyptic spin." dbrand claims that this protects them from the Sony lawsuit that doomed PlateStation, another PS5 accessory maker.

In fact, dbrand has been so bold as to be willing to be sued by Sony that I can't decide if it's incredibly stupid or a massive act of trolling.

If you are fortunate enough to have a PS5 and want to change your color scheme, you know exactly where to go. It is still available for pre-order.

Still, it won't be as hard to get as the actual PS5. First, since it does not require a computer chip, it will not be affected by the worldwide chip shortage that is limiting PS5 production. Also, there are no duffers buying up dark plates. In any case, not as far as we know.
