The new cloud service can avoid inventory shortages for Xbox Series X

Can't find a place to buy an Xbox Series X? Don't have a gaming PC? Well, no need to worry. Soon you'll be able to play some of the best Xbox games in a simple web browser. [Sources familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans told The Verge that testing is underway for a Web version of xCloud, Redmond's Xbox game streaming service. This would not only enable gaming on basic laptops, but could also make xCloud available on Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Apparently, this testing is being done ahead of a public preview. We have seen Microsoft do the same thing with xCloud on Android devices, streaming games to Android devices through the latest Xbox Game Pass app. xCloud can be accessed with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription is required.

xCloud was intended to allow Xbox games to be streamed from Microsoft's cloud servers as well as from home consoles via a mobile broadband connection, but so far only the former feature is offered.

The ability to play Xbox games like "Halo: The Master Chief Collection" on an Android phone connected to an Xbox wireless controller is very impressive. But there is clearly more to xCloud.

A web version of xCloud should be built on top of it, with a simple launcher in the browser that allows you to stream a selection of games to any PC, laptop, or compatible tablet with a controller to connect to it.

The Verge notes that web-based xCloud streaming seems to have a limitation in that it only works with Chromium-based browsers such as Google Chrome or Microsoft's own Edge browser. In other words, xCloud streaming will not work in Apple's Safari browser.

Also, given Apple's restrictions on the streaming services it supports on iOS and macOS, delivering xCloud through the browser would overcome the App Store's limitations, though it might incur Apple's wrath.

What is promising here is that many of Xbox's first-party games will appear on Game Pass. So if you are struggling to get an Xbox Series X or a less powerful Xbox Series S, xCloud may have you covered.

xCloud currently uses servers based on Xbox One S hardware, with upgrades planned for this year. However, it may be a temporary fix for those waiting for the Xbox Series X to become more affordable.

According to The Verge, the web version of xCloud could begin public beta this spring, likely before Xbox Seires X inventory reaches the same level of demand for Microsoft's new console.
